What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size of a grain of rice. Our skilled veterinarians, Dr. Ryan Smith or Dr. Reid Forman, can easily implant it under your dog’s skin using a large-bore needle. We often recommend doing this during spaying or neutering when your pet is under anesthesia, but it can be done during any routine visit. This small chip provides a permanent form of identification should your dog ever get lost.

How Does Microchipping Work?

While a microchip doesn’t function as a GPS tracker, it serves as a permanent ID for your pet. If your dog were to escape – whether through an open gate, from your car, or during fireworks – and someone brings them to a veterinary hospital or shelter, staff can use a microchip scanner to identify your pet and contact you.

Why Do We Recommend Microchipping?

At Love Animal Hospital & Urgent Care, we understand that despite our best efforts, accidents can happen. A microchip acts as an insurance policy, significantly increasing the chances of reuniting with your pet if they ever get lost. It’s a simple, one-time procedure that can provide peace of mind for the lifetime of your pet.

What If I Forget My Dog’s Microchip Information?

Don’t worry! We at Love Animal Hospital & Urgent Care maintain records of all microchipped pets. Additionally, the microchip company keeps this information on file. You can always contact us or the company to retrieve or update your information.

Are There Smart Products Connected to Microchips?

Currently, there are no smart products that directly connect to microchips. However, technology is advancing rapidly in the veterinary field. Some newer chips now include a temperature sensor, allowing us to take your dog’s body temperature simply by scanning the chip – no more rectal thermometers!
