Puppies are ideally adopted between six to eight weeks of age. Acquiring a puppy at eight weeks is crucial as this is the stage they should begin bonding with you rather than the littermates. Regardless of when you acquire your puppy, vaccinations should occur every three weeks until they are four months old.
What to Expect During Your First Visit

During your first puppy visit, we will cover various topics including wellness care, vaccinations, and parasite control. Effective parasite control is vital not only for your puppy’s health but also for your family. We will work diligently to prevent any zoonotic diseases—those that can transfer from pets to humans.
If you have children, we will provide thorough guidance to ensure everyone is safe and well-informed. Here at Love Animal Hospital & Urgent Care, we prioritize prevention, supplying you with products that stop parasite infestations before they can occur.
It is common for puppies to arrive with intestinal parasites, so a series of dewormings will be necessary. Each puppy’s needs vary according to their breed and size, and we will also encourage immediate attendance at puppy classes. Socialization is essential at an early age to help your puppy develop confidence and good behavior.
For each follow-up visit, starting with the first one scheduled with both a technician and a veterinarian, we will discuss your puppy’s behavior, progress in puppy class, and house training – an important topic to address.
Finally, when your puppy reaches four months old, you will have another consultation with our veterinarians to discuss spaying or neutering, any additional lab work, final vaccinations, and preventive care such as heartworm and flea/tick treatments. Just like with any healthcare plan, your puppy’s needs may differ, and we will tailor our advice accordingly.
Additionally, we highly recommend a follow-up visit around six months of age to address potential behavioral, dietary, and exercise concerns that may arise as your puppy grows and develops.
